Moscow 2010 Quarter-Final Interview

Anna lost to Vera Dushevina 3-6 6-7

Q. Today’s tie was very tense. You seemed to be nervous. How will you recover from it?
A. Basically, I already have. The season is over. The game was indeed really tense and kind of wavering: there were good streaks and streaks of mistakes. It was difficult for me to pull it together. But now the season is over and I hope to recover well during 3 weeks of rest.

Q. How will you prepare for the next season?

A. I haven’t decided yet. I’ll not change anything for sure, I’ll continue with the same coach. We do not know where we will prepare the next season, but not in Moscow for sure because of the weather. Probably somewhere in the South.

Q. What do you expect from yourself for the next season?
A. The second half of the season was good for me, but in general I do not like to make plans and put tension for myself that I have to reach top 20 or top 30.I try to focus on every given match in order to win it.

Q. How you managed to turn the tide in the second set? You found a weak spot in Dushevina’s game?
A. Initially, I was out of the course of the match. When I started playing well I already lost the first set and it was 0/3 in the second. When the match is even, it is more easy to fight your way to victory, but when you’re losing like that there is no more margin left and the pressure is considerable.

Q. Do you blame yourself for lost opportunities today?
A. Sure, I played in a wrong way the key points, but she served really well in the tie-break. In general, she was stable and steady today, she’s in good shape now. But I was too impatient on important points, or too patient when I had to risk.

Q. Whom are you going to support now in the event?
A. Generally, we only support ourselves. So, I do not know. There are 2 Russians in the semis, hence there will be a Russian player in the finals for sure. It’s good for the home crowd and for the tournament.

Q. How can you evaluate your result here?
A. Of course, I wanted quite badly to reach the semis. On the other hand, I beat a top 10 player here, Na Li. So, in general, I am satisfied, it could have been worse.

Q. Do you think you deserve a gift?
A. If I reached to semis or the finals, I would allow myself something.
